Extremely bleak image of the communist welfare state on its last toes.

Film is about as "cheerful" as Irreversible, Repulsion or Martyrs.

In short: Pitch black but it hits you like a fist in the face.

Masterpiece!

Still very mediocre, especially because it was all not very subtle and ultimately left me completely cold. I actually thought the 'abuse' wasn't that bad (and then we're just talking about rape, but I don't get really upset easily anymore). Beautiful images of a disintegrating country, beautiful in its ugliness and in very nice contrast with all those cheerful pop songs. But if the rest of the story had been of a better quality, I would probably have liked the film a lot better, especially the time in which it is set might have come to life a bit more. Now it was bordering on caricatural. Now it was mainly boring at times. 2.0*.

Another fine piece of misanthropy from our friends from the East. In the film we see a policeman committing crimes and murders with impunity, and with sadistic pleasure kidnapping a girl and torturing her both physically and mentally. Not that the rest of the people in the film are much better, moral bankruptcy actually applies to almost everyone here. Including, by extension, the system. Like the professor who would rather let an innocent man die than go through the inconvenience of testifying in court, the entire police force who have no problem letting Zhurov kill, and also Antonina who, after taking revenge on Zhurov, simply leaves that poor girl behind. This is my first introduction to Balabanov, and it certainly won't be my last; this was a dark, intriguing film that at times came across as the Russian equivalent of a Hollywood crime thriller (including sometimes unfathomable decisions), but also regularly took an unexpected turn. Including a gloominess that you don't encounter all that often; the scenes with the girl such as the rapes, but also how she ended up tied up naked between two rotting corpses, and was also left behind, I have rarely eaten them so pitch-black. I'm going to recover from this punch in my stomach.
