After his release from prison, an embittered ex-para is persuaded by a mysterious beautiful lady to rob the Paris-Bordeaux postal plane of five hundred million (old) francs. He finds no one willing to help him with that, except the superior who reported him for an offense that landed him in jail.

A thrilling and powerful film by Schoendoerffer. Atmospheric in black and white, it works beautifully to further emphasize the already dark atmosphere—and Marisa Mell, with her rather unusual neo-hippie attire, even for the 1960s, also comes across well. Perhaps more striking than beautiful, if I'm honest, but that's a matter of taste.
That might have made things easier for Bruno Cremer, who's utterly convincing as the ex-Indochine, ex-Algeria veteran who's now gradually lost all faith and cares about nothing. It's a role that suits him perfectly, and Schoendoerffer's direction clearly suited him, given their other films in which he's played similar roles.
His motives aren't entirely clear, nor are the other roles; that's appropriately left to us to decide. In that respect, too, the film clearly bears the hallmarks of virtually all of Schoendoerffer's other films—it's much more about the characterization and the way his protagonists deal with their past, the past he shares with them, and how his oeuvre has left deep scars. It's remarkable that he's managed to translate that into such beautiful films.
Incidentally, I remember the scene of the ending from a vacation in the early 1990s, and it looks like hardly anything has changed since the film was shot there. Indeed, it's completely deserted there outside the peak season. A few half-dilapidated houses, a few enormous bunkers that have tumbled down the dune onto the beach, and otherwise, not a soul.

Mell plays a woman who flaunts fashion and strikes the same poses throughout the film. The whole thing verges on a film noire set in the late Nouvelle Vague period. Cremer is released and reveals himself to have suffered significant trauma from the Algerian War. In the encounter with first Mell and then Jean-Claude Rolland, a triangle develops from which each tries to carve out their own advantage, leading to a surprising conclusion. Note the Paris of the 1960s, the posters... and the comrades' song. 3.2*
