Paris, the second half of the seventeenth century. Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe is the grand master of the viola da gamba. After the death of his wife, he and his two daughters Madeleine and Toinette live isolated from the outside world, far from all the intrigue of the French court of Louis XIV. Despite his hermitage, his music is known and loved far and wide. One day, Marin Marais, a young man who wants to be taught, arrives. He turns out to be a gifted student, but also turns out to be a very ambitious musician. When Marais falls in love with Madeleine, the confrontation with Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe is inevitable.

Strongly portrayed story, good actors, beautiful decors and clothing and of course the Baroque music, definitely a plus for fans of the genre.
Jean-Pierre Marielle in the lead role. It doesn't happen that often. Usually he is in a supporting role and quite often in less dramatic films. Regardless, he remains a much-loved actor.

Good film about an older musician who takes on a young man as an apprentice. The film takes you to the second half of the 17th century. The whole decoration and nature look beautiful. Can come across as a bit boring at times, but the film has a pleasantly relaxed pace and the classical music fits in seamlessly with this.

Not so much my thing this movie. It is actually a kind of biography of a gifted music player. Because he isolated himself from everything and everyone and was always busy with his musical instrument to improve it, not much is known about him. In France he may still have a little fame, but outside it will be a lot less. I had never heard of the musical instrument viola da gamba either, but that could just as well be my fault.
So pay a lot of attention to the music in the film. Objectively speaking, it's all beautifully designed. The decoration, the decor, the costumes ... In addition, attention is paid to the two daughters who are actually neglected by their obsessive absent father. A philosophical statement like a clock: "Tous les matins du monde sont sans retour". There's a lot of truth in that...
