The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash plot

"A living legend that will live long after other living legends have died."

Pythonesque parody of the Beatles success story. The film is cast in the form of a full-length documentary, but it is not about John, Paul, George and Ringo but about Dirk, Stig, Barry and Nasty, aka The Rutles. They scored hit after hit (I must be in love, Baby let me be) and were major competitors of the Rolling Stones and Paul Simon, among others, who also spoke about the success of The Rutles.

A very witty and especially sharp parody of The Beatles. Pythonesque absurdity is powerfully added to the highly detailed career of The Beatles. Major events are perfectly re-enacted, often changing one small aspect that has direct consequences for the entire event. The impersonations are very convincing, and the numerous cameos are a very nice addition. A very enjoyable rockumentary (the first ever, I believe) by Eric Idle.

Yesterday I was short on time, so I (re)watched this short TV film from 1978. It's a brilliant mockumentary about the infamous Liverpool pop group The Rutles, who broke through in 1962 with the song Goose-Step Mama and split up in 1970 due to differences of opinion.

The film is packed with catchy songs, with "I Must Be in Love" being the undisputed highlight. This song even made it to the Tip charts in 1978. It's also fun that the film features cameos from Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, and George Harrison, among others. The videos are often funny, but some are just too cheesy for words. All in all, a really enjoyable film, worth watching again in the future. 4.5*

A film I've seen countless times. It remains incredibly enjoyable. Even if it's often a bit corny. But hey, that's Eric Idle. Yesterday, when I saw the film again, I was actually struck by how incredibly cleverly the music is composed. It sounds like real Beatles songs.
