Forushande

Another beautiful human drama by Farhadi. Forushande is a bit more straight forward than his other films, but especially at the end Farhadi manages to turn it into an impressive spectacle about tensions between spouses, guilt, penalty, action/consequence etc. I am also a fan of Farhadi's regular actress Taraneh Alidoosti, and here too she is doing great. Humans are not perfect beings, and for Farhadi that remains an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

Beautiful film about average people who end up in a dramatic situation and cannot deal with it at all; very beautifully it is accurately portrayed how the lives of Emad and Rana are completely turned upside down by the incident. By the way, I like to echo the words of my predecessor: the female lead acted very, very strongly.

Nice insight into (contemporary) Iranian culture, a personal interest of mine. Penalties only follow for the somewhat meandering last half hour; it's as if Farhadi couldn't find a powerful ending that made the confrontation take too long in my eyes.

My third Farhadi film in the meantime after Le passé and the excellent A separation. Again a film that is somewhat along the same lines, in which certain events have serious consequences on a family level. A film where small nuances and emotions strongly influence the relationship between Emad and Rana as well.
It strikes me that Farhadi broaches themes that fit perfectly in our Western society and that the characters struggle with the same issues as we might. Extra interesting are the small cultural and religious undertones that mean an extra added value for the whole.

Strong performances and beautiful cinematography do the rest to make the whole believable. The denouement of the incident is strong and the interaction with the players is very nice, but l all in all fizzles out. It felt a bit unfinished to me, as if the inspiration had been lost for a while.

Here and there some superfluous film material that added little to the story. The school scenes, for example, had no added value. Nevertheless, a very captivating film that rightly won prizes at the Oscars and at the Cannes Film Festival.
