El Baño del Papa plot

1988. The inhabitants of the small town of Melo get quite excited when they hear that John Paul II will begin his visit to Uruguay with them. According to the media, more than 50,000 people are expected, which means 50,000 pilgrims who will need food and drink, paper flags, souvenirs and commemorative medals. The poor inhabitants of the town are brimming with enthusiasm; they hope not only for heavenly blessings, but above all for a share of the material yields. Beto, a small smuggler who scrapes his income by organizing bike rides to the border with Brazil, has a bright idea: he will build a toilet in front of his house and rent it out to the pilgrims.

Funny and at the same time deeply sad story about the impact on the poor, local population of the papal visit to Uruguay in 1988. The settings and the natural-looking acting make for an impressive whole.

The humorous way of telling cannot hide the fact that the film is in fact an indictment of the disinterest of the (church) authorities for the poverty and misery of gullible people at the bottom of society and against the dubious role of the media. So what else is new...?

Very good film images in this entertaining film that actually comes to the conclusion that even the Pope, in that part of the world where poverty is very great and the church father has the largest following, he too is incapable of providing the population with a better life.

I don't know how the current Argentinean pope is paying attention to the Latin American poor farmers, but in 1988 it was apparently not that big with JP II. Actually a rather depressing story - embellished with some lightness and happy note - of the local population. Nice as well those smuggling routes that were often done by bike.

Sympathetic and nice to have picked up. But it just meanders along. And that will not be different with me. A film that I will quickly forget. And the farmer ploughed on. Still just a little too little impact to really grab me.
