"A comedy about tragedy."

Dean is an artist who struggles with the prospect of maturity and all the insecurities that come with it. He has just come out of a serious relationship and is trying to come to terms with the fact that his parental home is being sold. Around him he sees his friends making steps in life, while he himself stands still. During an unplanned trip to Los Angeles, he meets Nicky, in whose company he can finally be himself. At the same time, something similar happens to his father, but at a different stage of his life. After meeting a real estate agent, he finds himself opening up again for the first time since his wife's death.

A decent film about a man whose life isn't quite back on track and takes a trip to Los Angeles. The film is partly about grieving, and in that respect, it has a few poignant moments. Otherwise, it's a perfectly good, easygoing film. The humor is rather dry and a bit corny here and there. Well-cast, and otherwise, this is certainly not a bad directorial debut from Demetri Martin. Easily 3.0 stars.

Main character Dean is trudging through life. He's grieving, maintaining a strained relationship with his father, has broken off his engagement, and is currently struggling as a cartoonist. He's depressed and barely able to move. He comes across as oddly inclined around people and repeatedly finds himself in painful situations. Situations that evoke vicarious embarrassment but are also very funny in a tragicomic way.

Besides the delightful tragicomedy, the film has another appealing element. It's interspersed with funny drawings from Dean's portfolio, which humorously and aptly connect to a situation or event in the film. The drawing style is simple and uncluttered, and always delightfully striking. The drawings regularly made me laugh out loud. And not just because of the drawings, by the way. The dialogue and one-liners are also very funny.

The film doesn't lead to any major outbursts of other emotions. Dean, played by Demetri Martin, who is both the director and writer of the film, is too distant for that. I don't know Demetri Martin, but I didn't really get the impression he was acting much. I strongly suspected he was just being himself. With established actors like Kevin Kline and Mary Steenburgen, who also have roles in the film, you don't feel that distance. I didn't find that objectionable. I just noticed that Dean didn't resonate with me emotionally.

Ultimately, what is much more important to note is that I enjoyed the film and I had several good laughs.
