Just a good movie this one, maybe a bit of a rip-off of Training Day for example and there are definitely elements from other police films. We've seen the overall picture before, of course, but the script is certainly not bad and the plot is well put together. The ending is also quite unexpected. The friendship between Reeves and Whitaker doesn't even seem finished so I didn't think the ending was that predictable, but in the end Whitaker turns out to be a "size sewer".

However, it is nowhere memorable but I do tend to give 4* for this. Also in terms of direction, soundtrack and action it is all good. The director's name will definitely stick with this one. David Ayer. I've already seen 3 of his films, but I didn't know that until just now... Nice material for a night in the week.

Flawed Ayer.

Street Kings should come from a time when Ayer should still be able to hold its own. Unfortunately for him it seems to have only stayed with certain films, because Street Kings is one of the films that cannot excel at anything. Not in direction, and not at the substantive level either.

However, Ayer always has the raw feeling that his films have well under control. His movies feel very close to the streets. The blood feels realistic, the cinematography is quite qualitative, Street Kings looks nice. The realism is partly lost because the cast is just a bit too well-known for these kinds of films.

The acting is nice though. Reeves does a pretty good job, and Whitaker also knows what to do with his role. Supporting roles such as Laurie and Evans also do well. The first half of the film also has some funny dialogues that provide a comical slant, but in the end the film is quite serious and all sharpness is lost.

Despite the fact that this film is never really boring and visually reasonable, I just miss some originality and added value. What does a movie like this really add? Not much, because it can't be above average in enough areas. The action scenes also don't really stand out and are scarce. Camera bumps nicely behind it, but that's about it.

Street Kings is the kind of movie you can expect from Ayer. Not brilliant, professionally directed but nowhere really above average. When Ayer does something that has not often been done before, then his films stand out. His spin is on the raw crime, but he rarely gets anything out of it that can be called solid and strong.
