I've Been Waiting for You plot

"Someone’s idea of a high school prank is about to turn very deadly!"

A California teenage girl with a keen interest in occult matters moves with her mother to a small New England town. The local teenagers believe that she is a witch who comes to take revenge on the offspring of those who killed a witch 100 years ago, who happens to have the same name as the girl. The teens try to gather evidence that she is a witch, and she is persuaded to act as a fortune teller at a Halloween party, in the hopes that they can determine if she really is a witch...

I watched this movie countless times when I was a little kid. I used to think it was so scary. I lost track of it for a while, and I think I lost it because I never found it again. Until a month ago, when I found it somewhere... deep in a box. Tonight, I decided to put it on again to see what I thought of it now.

I understand why people give "I've Been Waiting for You" a bad rating. I understand it so well, in fact, that I'm considering it myself. I'm not entirely sure yet. The only positive thing about this film so far is that it's brought back a nostalgic feeling for me. And that's not enough, of course.

The story itself isn't bad, although it has a lot of holes. In my opinion, it's not perfectly developed.

The visuals aren't all that great either, but hey, it's a 1998 film.

The acting performances are basically okay.

I'm not sure yet whether it will get a place in my closet. I still need to think about it deeply.

3*

I can imagine this one works better with a bit of nostalgia, but I didn't necessarily need it to enjoy it (surprisingly much). With a young Sarah Chalke (Scrubs ) and a wonderfully cheesy 90s TV movie look and sound. The downside of a TV movie like that is that it remains a bloodless affair, but I really love that supernatural (witchcraft) vibe. With actors who are actually too old for their roles (Christian Campbell, for example, was already 26) and some simple small-town folklore... wonderful!

A TV movie with a lot of well-acted, but utterly unsympathetic roles. Director Christopher Leitch also fails to create a stable atmosphere or make his film truly captivating, making "I've Been Waiting for You" (which does have an interesting legend to tell) rather slow to get going. Fortunately, prominent roles like those of Sarah Chalke and Ben Foster are well-cast and even with a wooden script, they handle it well. As the second half progresses, Leitch also adds a bit more horror, which makes things flow more smoothly, but this project won't be truly high-quality. Perhaps a certain degree of nostalgia, however.
