Saw this movie for the 2nd time.

With a slightly different view than the first time. 20 years ago this film made me think: gosh what a shitty country and people, you'll just sit there and experience this as a woman.

But this film is made from an American point of view and that is quite noticeable...

Moody's family appears to be strictly Islamic, which gives a completely wrong picture of the average Iranian. (I myself had a relationship with an Iranian so I know something about it).

You should know that at least 90% of Iranians have their own peaceful faith (Zoroastrianism) and have absolutely nothing to do with the Islam that the regime has been trying to impose on them since the revolution in 1979.

By the way, these people have always been in favor of the king under whom Iran was a prosperous and rather Western country. So just to be clear, Iran is not made up of Moody's and his family, this is just a small group.

Other than that, I still like the movie. Such a television drama and well played by Sally Field.

3.5 stars

What a great woman, really deep respect for what she has achieved in the circumstances she was in. Beautifully told film with good actors and also realistically presented. The film also deserves a higher score because it is still current in 2019.

An American married to an Iranian is taken hostage in Khomeini's Iran by her husband along with her daughter after a family visit. She only wants one thing: to do everything she can to escape from this terrible country. Taking away Betty's freedoms and rights is gut-wrenching. When she is in a Qur'an school, this came across as really surreal to me. It is also positive that Iranians are shown who were absolutely against the imposed fundamentalism; it's those people who helped Betty.

Iran is now much improved and is fully open to the west. It is a country that faces a bright future and is regarded as one of the new economies. Hopefully, after their dark years, they can now serve as an example for Muslim countries. Although the film harks back to events from 1984, I do realize that such situations may still occur somewhere in the world. Good film, less manipulative and sentimental than I expected, unfortunately not free of caricature as far as Iran is concerned. Molina was cut out for his role as an Iranian and Field puts in one of the stronger roles of her career.
