All the ingredients to make this a memorable historical film are there: impressive locations, beautiful costumes, attractive actors and actresses, tasty intrigue, romantic entanglements, famous historical characters with a reputation to play well, fat supporting roles (of which Jim Broadbent and Mark Strong benefit), a few opera scenes, am I forgetting anything? Not me, but the creators did, in my opinion at least: a good actor for the male lead, so that it would become clear who gives Victoria the strength and passion to face all the problems. Or do the makers assume that Emily Blunt already radiates enough of herself? It all hangs a bit in the air and lacks real tension; I looked fairly fascinated, but the real rapture is missing.

A little too romantically oriented for my liking; the last half hour you mainly see kisses, hugs, and loving faces. More balance with Victoria's political role would not have been out of place. Still, I thought it was a decent movie, partly because of the first half. Usually it is "cherchez la femme" where the driving force behind the man is actually the woman. Here it is "cherchez l'homme". Because Albert and Victoria formed a complementary and well-functioning couple. Young Victoria's inexperience was complemented by Albert's sense of reality. This also came out nicely in the movie. Another interesting take is the role of John Conroy, who was said to have been the lover of Victoria's mother for many years and even the father of the Queen (!). This also explains his paternalistic behavior towards young Victoria. Lord Melbourne was particularly poorly cast. He was in his sixties but here he looks like his late thirties. Blunt was a little better this time. Ups and downs for a drama that never really impresses. The perfect 3* movie for me.

Oscar winner for best costume design focuses on the period before and after Victoria [Emily Blunt]'s coronation as Queen of Great Britain, shortly after her 18th birthday. Pending the death of King William IV [Jim Broadbent], Victoria's mother [Miranda Richardson] and Sir John Conroy [Mark Strong] are trying to set up a regency that will temporarily give them more say because Victoria would not yet have enough life experience. Victoria refuses to sign the necessary documents, but her lack of experience quickly gets her into trouble because of the influence that political leader Lord Melbourne [Paul Bettany] has over her. Her life takes a positive turn in every way when she meets Albert [Rupert Friend], who initially becomes her friend and confidante but – as we know – would later become her husband. A feast for the eyes with a strong cast. Captivating as long as it focuses on the political intrigue, a lot less interesting when it focuses on the love letters Victoria and Albert exchanged.
