The Life before Her Eyes plot

"Your life can change in an instant. That instant can last forever."

Diana and Maureen are two best friends with very different personalities. Diana is the unhinged slut, Maureen the good girl from church. Then the teens get involved in a Columbine-esque shooting incident at their school and are faced with an impossible choice. Only one of them is allowed to live.

Quite a complicated movie. It was only with the very last shot that the penny dropped for me (re-entering the toilet was of course the last flash that came by!) . Evan Rachel Wood is not only a beautiful girl, but she is also getting better and better at acting. Great film by Perelman, but a lot less than "House of Sand and Fog".

A very beautiful and skillfully constructed drama.

But what I have a hard time with with this film is the moral that I think I see in it. Rather on the serious fundamentalist-Christian side, and the fact that it is worked in quite subtly is actually all the worse. High level manipulation.

Wood and Thurman are convincing enough as the younger and older versions of Diana, and both play very well. Also clever how Maureen is portrayed, beautiful acting by Eva Amurri and a lot of clever work from the direction and camera how she is gradually built up during the film into the lily-white beautiful girl of the church.

The start is rather slow, by the way, and the trick with the repetition of the bathroom scene also gets a bit boring at a certain point. Still, where in the beginning it seems that there will be no more than an hour and a half stretched predictable end, after half an hour there is some movement in the plot, and that gets steadily stronger towards the end.

So sorry for the moral. As a result, I can't help but get a pretty nasty aftertaste from it.

“Maureen, what did I do to deserve a friend like you?”

“Um, something in a past life?”

Atmospheric. The Life Before Her Eyes shows that a 'school shooting' can leave deep marks on relatives and survivors, but director Vadim Perelman does give it his own twist. How everything comes together in the end won't appeal to everyone, but I thought it was a beautiful and satisfying ending. With fantastic acting from Wood, Thurman and Amurri.
