A film from another era.

The whole basic idea is that politics is about facts, abides by the law and respects normal and polite manners, and if any of those boundaries are crossed, there are consequences for the politician who made the mistake.

But unfortunately we have let that go somewhere, thanks to right-wing populism and social media algorithms. One of the less damaging side effects of that is that this film hardly works anymore.

Except that it is about that. Let this film be a call to all politicians, all populists, and a reminder of what it means when you lie 'in office'. Let this film be a reminder of how wrong, how fundamentally wrong the 'official secrets act' and similar legislation is. A decent democracy has no state secrets, and history shows time and again that when that exception is invoked, it has nothing to do with the interests of the state or society.

It may still not be a very good film, thanks in no small part to the ravages of time and despite the fine role of Byrne and the as always peerless Denholm Elliott - there is no one who can convey in a polite but nevertheless completely clear way that what his conversation partner - or the speaker he is responding to - is simply rabid nonsense. If only we still had such people in politics, the world would be a much better place.
