"How can a man have a good time if his wife knows he's having it?" Bob as a hustler in the army: he tries to get out of the messes he's gotten himself into by chaperoneing three respectable ladies for a fee, together with two other conscripts, but naturally, things don't go as planned. Seemingly based on a very successful 1941 musical by Cole Porter starring Danny Kaye, but for this film version, most of Porter's songs were replaced by songs composed specifically for the film, and Hope's dialogue was spiced up with the rapid-fire one-liners for which he was renowned. The result is a reasonably amusing comedy that never really catches fire, but the ladies and the soldiers are evenly matched, Betty Hutton gets to sing a few songs, and the (unfortunately limited) presence of ZaSu Pitts with her big eyes and perpetually surprised face is always a plus. A very nice moment when the three soldiers perform a little dance arm in arm for the three ladies who paid for them; otherwise, an average farce with a lot of shouting and a bizarre deus ex machina in the last five minutes.
