Apparently youthful sentiment?

Had never seen the movie before, didn't even know his name. Not so strange in itself, because it is not much more than a third-rate Disney film. It is also reminiscent of the 70s work of Disney, although even that is a little better animated.

Visually it is really very poor. Rather ugly drawing style and the animation is not much. Here and there some CG to "spice up", but in 2017 that is no longer something to be happy about. The movie looks seriously outdated.

In terms of show, it also goes in all directions. One moment very sentimental, the next moment Dostoyevsky is referred to and the next moment you get that stupid running gag with the three dogs for the umpteenth time. Which is really rammed into the beginning of the film (couldn't help it, given the short running time).

That playing time also applies at the end, when the epic journey through the snow is completed in a good 10 minutes. Includes snow avalanche, crashing icicles and falling bridge over ravine.

It's all very poorly executed. Tone and tempo are all over the place and technically it's all nothing. Fortunately, it is quickly done and the winter setting is contagious on a cold, rainy day.

1.5*

Nice animation, which I apparently had missed, with a nice story that is inspired by true events. At the beginning of the last century, diphtheria struck in a village in the Arctic, causing several children to become seriously ill. Due to the winter weather, it was not possible to bring medicines to the remote village on time and they had to be taken by sled dogs over a distance of more than 1000 kilometers. be transported urgently.

With that premise, Disney makes a beautiful film about one of those sled dogs, Balto. Towards the 4*.

Youth sentiment for many? Otherwise I can't explain those high scores. I thought this was just a very simple movie in which the voices don't fit the characters (dogs) at all, visually this gene has specifics and furthermore the movie knows all the beaten paths. There is nothing surprising in it, in the beginning it is possible to map out how the film is going from A to Z. Now that is with more films, but they still have good other elements. Balto doesn't have that at all. In terms of atmosphere, the film is still okay and because of the short running time not very annoying, but that's all. 1.5*.
