Good film about the myth Beowulf who attacks the monster Grendel. Visually a fine piece of work with beautiful camera shots that would not be possible in real-life. The story is brutal and bloody and the film contains quite a few spectacular action scenes. Due to the motion-capture technique, much of the actor's performance remains on the screen, but they are certainly not real people yet.

What a joke that Zemeckis has become. He may have great films to his credit, but ever since he switched to computer-animated films, his work has been a mockery of first-class. Why animate a story like Beowulf's when you have excellent actors? In fact, I think it's a bit of an insult to people like Anthony Hopkins and John Malkovich (perhaps this doesn't make his role come across at all) to completely mimic them. Moreover, I wonder why someone makes an animation, when they want to make it as realistic as possible.

We don't have to talk long about the film. From start to finish it is so wickedly constructed that you almost forget that the story is so mangled. Had it been made into a normally acted film with a slightly different (and perhaps more heroic story) and other names, you could at least still speak of a nice fantasy story based on Beowulf's. The confrontation with Grendel's mother is downright laughable. Give me Beowulf and Grendel starring Gerard Butler.

I was completely surprised by the animations in this movie. Somehow I had missed that whole detail and so I assumed I was just seeing actors. However, I got used to the animations pretty quickly but didn't find it overwhelmingly beautiful unfortunately. The story flows fairly smoothly, but the animations do detract from it. Sometimes it felt more like I was watching an expansion game for The Sims... No, this movie just didn't do it for me.
