Murder Party plot

"Everybody Dies..."

One Halloween night, good-natured Chris is strolling on his way home from work when a gust of wind sends a mysteriously signed letter fluttering in front of him. Closer inspection learns him of an upcoming private party, a "Halloween" party. Chris doesn't hesitate and gets ready - costume and all - for this Halloween party. A godsend, it seems. What he doesn't know, however, is that he the main guest is of an art freak night with students who compete for a quarter of a million dollars for the bloodiest art expression with Chris as the direct object.

Mediocre.

Every director has a first production that is unlikely to be great, and Saulnier has this in the form of Murder Party. The idea itself always appeals to me, but the execution is sometimes frighteningly simple and somewhat bland.

Made abundantly clear with budgetary constraints. In fact, this was made with the cast's own money. So there must have been fun in that, and that is noticeable, but the result on a visual level was made with little love, which is also very clear.

Shots that anyone can actually do, that's how the film feels. The cast themselves seem to be looking forward to it and are fully involved in it. There was humor, but it didn't really work. This is mainly because it is all done a little too distantly.

Horror itself is quite a failure, although there are buckets of blood flying here and there, especially in the ending. However, it remains abundantly clear that this is very simple and has received little attention. Almost only 1 location was used, probably due to the limitations.

Camera use is ugly, acting is sufficient, especially because the types actually seem to work. Blair in particular stands out with his role. Some boring environments, and a story that gets boring quickly. Especially because nothing really seems to happen anywhere in the first part of the film.

79 minutes therefore feel very long, and if just a little more attention had been paid to the finishing of the film, it might have been a bit more enjoyable. But in the end this has gone quite far as a film.

This film is one of the 3 worst I have seen in recent years and I have seen quite a few, what a waste that was.

Everyone has to start somewhere, including director Jeremy Saulnier. Without this debut we wouldn't have had his excellent films Blue Ruin, Green Room and Hold The Dark, so we'll just turn a blind eye to this shoddy work. Amateurish stuff, with obvious, overly thick satire and lame murders. The acting isn't that bad and it's nice to see regular actor Macon Blair making an appearance here, but this is really quite marginal.
