I thought this was a very nice comedy. Accessible but very witty film with a fast pace, lots of fun reverences and a great series of cameos. The dynamics of the actors among themselves are very good and they create a sub-culture in a comical way. I can just imagine that in fifteen years Fanboys will be a well-known cult film.

“Nobody calls Han Solo a bitch!”

As a big Star Wars fan I can appreciate a lot of winks to the film series. The most fun is the car the boys and Kristen Bell drive. A kind of Millennium Falcon on four wheels. The movie itself is a bit hit and miss.

The battle between the Trekkies (Trekkers?) and the Star Wars nerds is pretty fun and the actors are on a roll. Yet the humor is not always successful and it all becomes less and less as the film progresses. I thought the dramatic twist would play a bigger role but very little is done with it, so it has little impact. The last scene is very strong.

The fanboys in this Kyle Newman movie dedicate their lives to Star Wars. With all soul and bliss. They find the mating behavior of the ewok many times more interesting than maintaining social contacts. Of course, it's very easy to dismiss the characters in Fanboys as ridiculous nerds. And although that sometimes happens a bit, the film succeeds in making the fanboys mainly empathetic characters.

In 1998, the fanboys hatch a plan to break into the Skywalker ranch where George Lucas resides, in order to watch Star Wars 1: The Phantom Menace before it hits theaters. Obviously, the journey to the ranch is more important than the ultimate goal. Crazy things happen during the trip, old hurts and mutual bonds are strengthened.

The love for detail stands out. The quotes and facts are flying around your ears. Star Wars, Star Trek and many other pop culture highlights pass by. There are also guest appearances. Carrie Fischer, Billy Dee Williams and William Shatner, among others, make a short appearance.

The story is quite conventional but is nicely filled with light dialogue and hectic events that give the film momentum and keep it fresh. The last half hour the cake is a bit gone. The scenes in the ranch are actually pretty bland.

Fanboys is a pleasant film about shared madness and friendship. A little serious now and then, but mostly frivolous and humorous. Too bad I ran out of inspiration at the end.
