When her mother's boyfriend begins to take an unhealthy interest in her, Jasira, a thirteen-year-old American Arab girl, is sent by her mother to Texas to live with her Lebanese father. However, her strict father is unable to give his teenage daughter the attention and love she needs, nor can he deal with Jasira's conflicting feelings about her rapidly changing body. America is about to invade Kuwait, and Jasira becomes increasingly isolated at school when her classmates start berating her for "Dishtowel!" Her loneliness and growing frustration with her parents' conflicting rules drive her to rebellion. She also struggles with her burgeoning sexuality.

A couple of immature parents who cry out their feud in front of the child and who also blame her for the discord, a dominant father with no understanding for his daughter, a hysterical mother with a lot of self-interest, both have no empathy at all, no wonder it child is looking for a pat on her head. Very realistically portrayed.
Unfortunately, I think the child in the film is too quick to bite into too many sexual advances at a much too young age and it doesn't seem so believable to me anymore. From a timid girl to a vamp in a few weeks, well...
The acting was also fine. So quite a nice movie.

Excellent film in which a thirteen-year-old American Arab girl struggles with her burgeoning sexuality. A rather penetrating and provocative portrait about a girl who is used/abused by everyone, even her parents. A successful satire with a very black and razor-sharp edge. A brave role by Summer Bishil that passes effortlessly for a thirteen-year-old here. I thought her father (Peter Macdissi) looked a lot like an Arabian Kevin Kline.

A pretty strange film, but the makers dare to think out of the box in terms of subject matter and can rely on a good cast. The whole thing may feel a bit too much like a nothing to worry about film and that could also be due to the languid atmosphere that hangs over the film. This also makes the film look slow and the playing time is also a bit too long. On the other hand, it also makes the film unique and fits well with the black humor that this Towelhead contains a lot.
