After reviewing, I dramatically increased my appreciation for this character study. I don't know what the female counterpart of "cock behavior" is called, but that's what it's about. Film shows very recognizable vicious relationships, such as those that occur in many a family. It's good that Jack Black provides the necessary counterbalance with his actions and comments, otherwise it would all have been very heavy. In terms of acting, the kids and Jennifer Jason Leigh stand out.

Broke movie.

But in any case, Baumbach's films rarely appeal to me. Mainly characterized by annoying characters who try to find their way in some heightened drama. Baumbach is full of the "real" type of people that I try to avoid as much as possible in "real" life.

Not that this movie feels so amazingly realistic. There is also a dash of comedy in it, but it is rarely funny. Not sharp enough, not exaggerated enough, not dark enough ... it's not enough anyway. In terms of drama, it could come out better, but Baumbach's direction is much too poor for that.

Acting is the best part of the film, but you don't save furniture with that either. And it doesn't last too long, which prevents even worse suffering. But the film had nothing to do with me at all, except for some irritation here and there.

1.5*

“Make sure you can handle rejection. I can't.”

I usually appreciate Baumbach's films, but Margot at the Wedding is one of his lesser films. Insufferable characters, a very strange balance of humor and drama that doesn't work and a just plain boring story. Family vicissitudes have probably never been portrayed so boringly. Even Nicole Kidman can't change that.
