Cementerio del Terror plot

A professor suspects that a vicious killer may return from his grave to continue his violent practices. And what were the Mexicans up to in the horror department in the eighties? The first half hour is quite a musty slasher with a breathless killer, then we get through the teenage fodder and move on to the young kids celebrating Halloween in the graveyard, and it all starts to look suspiciously like The Goonies, but by then we are already an hour into the film and fear we are watching one of the most terrible monstrosities of the year. But then director Galindo Jr. really goes off the rails when the sweet little kids seem to have landed straight in Zombi 2, and we end up having a little over half an hour of fun after all.

I was quite taken aback by the life choices our Mexican friends make in this plot. It starts with inviting your girlfriend to a jet-set party, complete with photographers, VIPs, and the like, only to end up in an abandoned house full of cobwebs. Not very surprising; the ladies didn't appreciate that. Next, they break into a morgue to steal a body. Only to then perform an occult rite with their girlfriends—for the shits and giggles—with the aforementioned corpse at the cemetery—that they are actually up for. And even if this goes wrong, there is still every reason to make out a bit. But anyway, the plot has to start somewhere, and to be honest, the build-up was already long enough.

It won't come as a surprise, the rite mentioned above wasn't such a good idea. What follows is a decent low-budget zombie movie. The low budget is evident in the fact that most of the gore is shown fairly indirectly. But I say zombie movie now; there is more going on—someone also gets split open by a sort of telekinetically floating axe. Anyway, not the best story ever (a corpse is resurrected, but it turned out to be sort of cursed already, but there is also some sort of poltergeist, and the kids get scared out of their wits by something else in a crypt, and then more undead follow, but how that all connects, well—something to do with black magic but it remains vague), not the best visuals ever, let alone the best actors, but I had a great time with this somewhat chaotic and very 80s horror.
