House on Haunted Hill plot

"Consult your doctor! Bring your seat belts!"

An eccentric and paranoid millionaire throws a ghost party for his fourth wife at a house with a reputation for murder. To this end, he invites five apparently random guests, each with their own motive, to accept the invitation. The house has no electricity or telephones and will be hermetically sealed after midnight. Anyone who spends the night there gets $10,000 and as the night slowly creeps on, the game of murder begins.

Although there were certainly numerous haunted house films made before House on Haunted Hill, the influence of the film on the 60s and 70s is clearly noticeable. The difference with films like The Haunting and The Innocents, however, is that the tone here also has something of the humor of the haunted house films from the 20s and 30s and also the crime element.

Also notable is that Castle deliberately chooses to remind us that this is a contemporary film (quite unusual for this kind of Horror at the time) by means of guns, highways and the fact that the film was shot in the 20th century Ennis House by modern architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Atmospheric black and white cinematography and Vincent Price as a charming host. What more do you need on October 31st?

Good movie, good story, with the talented Vincent Price. Very exciting story that remains mysterious until the end. I can't really call it horror.

Excellent old horror in which a number of people try to survive in a haunted house. Whoever survives gets 10,000 dollars from an eccentric. It seems like a sadistic game of a deranged lunatic or is there more to it?

Great build-up and the film immediately grabs you by the throat. With its short duration of 75 minutes, the film is very concise and there is little fuss. Yet the film does not feel fleeting or rushed. Fine introduction of the characters in the cars via a voice-over. They each have a reason to receive the 10,000 dollars. What motive does the wild benefactor have? And what about the ghosts and the previous murders in the possessed house?

The film is driven by mystery and suspense. And atmosphere of course, which is great. The dialogues are fine and everyone plays their part. One screams perhaps a bit too much and Ruth perhaps gets too little attention. The two servants were also a bit of a sideshow. All in all, the clue is not that surprising, but I certainly enjoyed this film immensely.
