Entertainment.

It's actually crazy, given the success of a franchise like Star Wars, that more directors don't dare to create something similar. Outside of Besson, I can't immediately name anyone who tries to mix fantasy and science-fiction in a similarly comical way. Unfortunately his Fifth Element is the better of the two attempts.

Visually I didn't find it that impressive. Rather kitschy designs (although often intended) and effects that didn't always look very convincing (probably partly was intended). It makes the whole world look rather rubber/plastic at times, that can be charming, but here it occasionally left something to be desired. Perhaps because the budget made it look just a bit too slick for a "charming" look, making it the worst of both worlds at times.

The story is also very basic. It also doesn't surprise me that this is based on some 70s comic (never read), but it just feels that way. 140 minutes is way too long for a film like this, on the other hand you can't commit much if you want to launch an epic space opera franchise.

Luckily it's fun. Enough pace, many different things so that there is always something to watch and a central duo that entertains. Not a high-quality film, but a funny snack. And if the comparison has to be made, in terms of lightness and fun much better than the current Star Wars rubbish.

The malodorous "You can polish a turd all you want, in the end it's still a turd" is completely true for this movie flop. Again those worn-out lame jokes a la Guardians of the Galaxy, also such a mountain of fakeness.

Once again proof that a big budget and a lot of CGI don't make a good movie. The cast is especially depressing. De Haan is not that bad, but Delenvigne is a walking irritation and who would dare to cast Herbie Hancock? Visually beautiful, but so eclectic that very little of it sticks.
