Inkheart plot

"Every story ever written is just waiting to become real."

Mo Folchart has a wonderful but sometimes terrible talent. When he reads aloud from books, he brings the characters to life. When he reads from the book Inkheart one day, he takes some villainous characters out of the book and into the real world. As if that wasn't bad enough, his wife disappears into the book. His daughter Meggie knows nothing of her father's talent, only that to this day he refuses to read. Capricorno, one of the culprits in the book, has spent years looking for Meggie's father to use his powerful talent for his own dark purposes. Meggie and her father will have to do everything they can to prevent that and save Meggie's mother.

Good Brendan.

Brendan Fraser is now the Dean Jones of today. The Disney actor of yesteryear had the same brave appearance, but was still lucky to occasionally pick up a classic. The latter may lie ahead for Fraser. Probably not, because the man will always be cast for the same type of family film. He knows how to generate a nice sandwich with it.

Nothing wrong with that, but this fantasy 'Inkheart' doesn't distinguish itself from other work within the genre either. A more interesting protagonist might have made all the difference. Things start off nice and the cast is otherwise reasonable, but it is mainly played it safe and all the well-known clichés are passed. So not very startling and really only really fun for small children, despite the dark hue.

Average.

Sympathetic, but ultimately a big mess. The largely British cast clearly believes in it, but the script is very messy making it difficult to really invest yourself in the characters. I'm not familiar with the book series, but I still have the idea that the story is not done much justice. Unless it turns out that these books weren't very good either, in which case I didn't say anything. No, it's all good to sit through the acting of Mirren, Serkis, Fraser and especially Bettany and the film does have a nice fantasy atmosphere, but it feels too rushed to be really good. The film becomes a bit more spectacular towards the end with the arrival of the shadow and the inclusion of the many well-known fantasy figures is liked, so it is still not very annoying. However, good is different.

I think the book Tintenherz by Cornelia Funke has a very interesting concept and I would have loved to read it as a child. However, this Hollywood film adaptation is a bit too superficial to really captivate. "Action hero" Brendan Fraser is miscast as Mo, but otherwise the casting itself was nice. The bad CGI and stereotypical plot were especially bothersome. The ending was really a big deus ex machina. Perhaps the film would have had more character if it had been a German film instead of a small-scale Hollywood project.
