O Ano em Que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias plot

In 1970 the world is turned upside down: military dictatorships threaten South America and the war in Vietnam is raging. But for 12-year-old Mauro in Brazil, it is more important that the World Cup is just around the corner. But that quickly changes when his parents, left-wing activists, have to go into hiding and he has to live with his grandfather. When something unexpected happens to Grandpa, he is taken care of by Shlomo, his Jewish neighbor. A new period in their lives is beginning for both.

Beautiful melancholy film that subtly wraps its political subtext in a seemingly simple story about a Brazilian boy who goes to stay with his grandfather in 1970. The plot is perhaps a bit too sparse to keep you interested throughout the entire film and the pace is very slow, but the sketched era is very nice and visually everything looks great. Enough nice details also to keep the attention.

The World Cup in 1970 - in which he is completely absorbed - and the political situation in Brazil at that time - of which he still has little awareness - as the background of the portrait of a boy whose puberty is just around the corner.

Parents have to flee, son cannot come along and has to stay with grandpa, grandpa dies, and the boy has to go to strangers: a dramatic fact, but brought out with a positive look.

Particularly attractive; slow, but compelling and captivating; realistic; and with a healthy dose of humour.

Young Michel acts very well, just like the rest of the gang; the girl, one Daniela Piepszyk, is absolutely the max.

Wonderful cinema, the better work within my favorite genre.

The era of the dictatorship in Brazil in the year 1970 is well portrayed. The threat is never far away and there are constant links to the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, where Brazil will become world champions.

The story itself has enough drama, yet it doesn't really touch you. The story also drags on a bit and does not captivate everywhere. Despite the shortcomings, the film manages to hold its own because of the era, the atmosphere, the young cast and the tragedy. 6/10
