Less well than I remember.

Especially a lot less creepy. Had the idea that this one was a lot more exciting than the remake, but after seeing both within a fairly short time frame, I clearly prefer the remake. With this Ringu, the focus is on the protagonists and not so much on the video and that makes it a lot less interesting, especially because the acting is of a questionable level.

Also some nice scenes. Of course the one at the end, but also in the pit is above average. Nice construction.

But still not what I expected.

Japanese original from the more famous American The ring. It's been a while since I've seen the last one, so my comparison would be a bit skewed. I do know that I found The ring quite scary and very good in terms of suspense and plot. Still, I had the feeling that the emphasis and pace in this film is different than in its American brother.

The concept does have something. You also involve the viewer directly in the plot, except for the chilling phone call, of course. The tension and effect seem less to me. That TV scene still works. Great idea! The underlying idea may also be found in Japanese culture, but it didn't seem enough to me as a layman.
