Anyone who wasn't a fan of Dustin Hoffman will surely have to convert after seeing this film, because although the adaptation of Miller's play is very special in many respects (setting, decor, cinematography, dialogue...), it is the performance of this class act that leaves the strongest impression. What the still relatively young John Malkovich and Kate Reid achieve is also worth mentioning.
The theme of the film is timeless, dealing with illusion and disillusionment within a family that, despite good intentions, has never become a close-knit, successful unit and perhaps never will.

Volker Schlondorff skillfully succeeds in telling this famous, dialogue-filled play in a cinematic manner without unnecessarily distracting attention from the actors. Dustin Hoffman reprises the role he plays on Broadway, and although his energetic performance on the small screen sometimes appears somewhat exaggerated, he certainly manages to convey the tragedy of his iconic character. Schlondorff's inventive direction elevates this above mediocrity, but John Malkovich makes the biggest impression as one of Hoffman's sons. A role that is all the more fascinating because it proves that Malkovich could also portray vulnerable characters exceptionally well. A finely acted and well-made stage adaptation.

A stark and laborious film full of dialogue, with Dustin Hoffman in fine form. A film that, however, did not entirely convince me. Based on a play, and it felt like one too. Even the sets seemed to be heading in that direction. Not that that was a wrong choice.
The powerlessness and despair are clearly conveyed. The monologue of the sawing man who sees everything around him going wrong but doesn't know how to handle it. Maybe I should give him another chance someday, but right now I just didn't quite hit the mark.
