Screams of a Winter Night plot

"In the shadow of evil, in the echo of sins. In the icy stare of moonlight, our ghostly tale begins."

Ten students go camping in the woods. On the way to their destination, they encounter a drunken man who warns and frightens them with all kinds of terrible things that have happened there. Once in the woods, the students tell each other scary stories about a blood-hungry college student and a Native American ghost.

In my opinion, this movie is not very good. The story has many elements from genre peers from that period, making one wonder who copied it from whom.

The acting is bad, especially the opening scene at the pump is a joke and does not come across well at all.

The story still has competence, but it doesn't come through, mainly due to the acting.

Furthermore, we also have to make do with little blood and only the subtle combination of a howling wind and a keyboard/synthesizer manages to provide some atmosphere.

There is a VHS rip of this film on YouTube, but I can't recommend it.

A horror gem from the late seventies that has been snowed under. This is enjoyment. The remote setting and context reminded me of the later Blair Witch Project - especially the evocative side to it. For the director and writer, it was their debut film and certainly a labor of love. Although the choice for the horror genre was of course also motivated by the commercial possibilities - and an argument to convince the financier. In order to attract the widest possible (young) audience, an approach was chosen that emphasizes suspense. And they did that well. It is certainly exciting and you don't need fake blood or nude scenes for that. Fans of these things will not get their money's worth here. This is more of a film for the Blair Witch Projectlover, although this film goes a bit further.

In any case, it is a film with a lot of variety thanks to an anthology of different horror stories that the travelers tell each other. But the nice thing is that the framework story also moves along nicely towards the end. I think the acting is fine for what it should be. The women tend to scream and the men are masculine. For me that is not a problem and in the seventies they saw no problem with it either. These and other films from the past have a kind of realistic grit that is not hindered by guiding ideology and the like.
