Rinne is a nice surprise who knows how to entertain an evening. It all looks like it's going to be a typical Japanese horror: cute girls, ghost girls and many shots of girls being stared at by undead girls. These examples are all there, but the interesting story and setting make it all a bit special. The film is bursting with atmosphere and the fine acting makes for a fun experience. Certainly not one of the best Japanese horrors, but certainly not a bad one either. In the meantime, I expect no less from the Japanese: excellent horror.

In my opinion, there is no one character that the story centers around. Two ladies actually share that honor: Yuka and Karina. They move parallel to each other and give the film a fresh look. While Yuka is absorbed by the film she is starring in, Karina investigates more. All this makes for interesting plot twists and a nice piece of cinema.

The hotel has simply been chosen masterfully. The hotel immediately stands out because of its unusual construction. Ideal setting for a horror and has more than proven itself as such. It all creates a lugubrious atmosphere. I even think the hotel deserves a mention in the list of scariest haunted hotels, which, for example, also includes the hotel from The Shining.

Rinne is an original horror that captivates from start to finish. The characters are interesting and the locations have a sinister atmosphere. The lack of cheap scare effects is certainly a relief. Highly recommended for all horror fans. If you like this one, I also recommend that you see the Thai horror film Coming Soon (2008), a film with the same interesting design.

Difficult to judge a picture that is quite atmospheric but at the same time needlessly confusing. The fact that there is not always a ready-made answer in the denouement does not in itself have to be a problem (certainly not in this genre), but in this case present/past, life/death and delusion/reality were just too mixed up while some events clearly anticipate some kind of explanation. For example, I think of the student's treasure hunt and the conversations with a survivor of the massacre. It is precisely that contradiction that makes it confusing, where you can quietly get lost in the dream cinema of, say, David Lynch without having to worry about the chronology and meaning of what is shown. Fortunately, Rinne contains some gruesome and very dark, atmospheric scenes that regularly reminded me of Fulci's The Beyond, even though there is no connection whatsoever. The finale is an extended ordeal of the main character with quite graphic and creepy images. For that reason alone you should see Rinne.

Weak horror film, which after a fairly creepy beginning quickly descends to a questionable level. Director Takashi Shimizu is an expert within the genre and should know what to do with this material, but apart from a few goosebumps moments in the first few minutes, he doesn't do much of it. The plot is very repetitive and vague; the characters are not interesting.
