A painful combination of a great concept and a stellar cast, but ultimately it's subpar. It wants so hard to be hip and trendy that it's actually not.

Still quite surprisingly fun at times.

The acting was very good at least.

There wasn't a whole lot of action, but that's not a big deal.

Friday night kicked off with this Dead Fish, whose title didn't ring a bell and I took a chance on it because of the cast. At home, I realized I had actually seen the film, thanks to a comment on my previous MovieMeter account where I hadn't been particularly positive about it. Anyway, I gave it a try, and it wasn't exactly a success.

The premise is clear, with loan sharks, hitmen, mafia bosses, and a bunch of not-so-bright characters caught in the middle. This quickly leads to comparisons with Guy Ritchie's best films like Lock Stock and Snatch, but that's where the comparison with these films and the genre ends. Because aside from a more than decent cast and the gorgeous Elena Anaya, it's ultimately all rather pathetic, as is the humor, which is only occasionally enjoyable, when Lynch combs a strip club in a miner's helmet.

It's not boring because there's plenty going on, but it's all exceptionally mediocre. The characters aren't particularly likable, the humor isn't either, the story surrounding Abe is just as uninteresting as Lynch's puppy love. It just doesn't add up, and it feels like it drags on too long, even though it's only an hour and a half. As a result, this might be one of the worse films I've seen this year.
