Reasonable thriller, with a few pleasant surprises that keep your attention. As usual, Dominic Monaghan is not special in the leading role, but the beautiful, previously unknown to me, Ksenia Solo is fine. The concept suggests a somewhat boring and predictable whole, but in the end it isn't that bad.

Mwa.

Torrens chooses a simplistic concept for his film Pet and tries to make it as complex as possible. On paper this seems like a very simple genre film, but nothing could be further from the truth. Pet has several twists and turns that you would not expect and a story that packs a remarkable punch. Nothing wrong with the right effect.

That seems to be going well for quite some time. Apart from the fact that Torrens makes it all quite gray, the first half is quite interesting. When the twists and turns emerge, the director himself doesn't seem to know what to do anymore and lets the whole thing drag on a bit. The film is suddenly stretched and you feel that as a viewer, resulting in a tough second half.

Too bad, because a film like this screams craziness. It comes out in a slow form, but not in the right form. It doesn't really break through and everything is a bit slow. That doesn't always work out for the best in a film like this. The chemistry will then have to work very well, but that does not happen here. Monaghan and Solo are doing well individually, but less so compared to each other.

Visually it looks drab and gray. It certainly fits within the "room" itself, but the camera work, montage and editing are somewhat weak. The cinematography is of a high standard, but cannot compensate for this compared to the other elements. It does have potential, but mainly in terms of content and not in terms of the visual aspect, which is a shame.

The acting is nice and the first half, when the mystery is still there, is also nice. It drags a bit during the second half, resulting in some lesser scenes, but I still wanted to give it a passing grade. However, I thought the ending was too mediocre. Not the twist, but the fact that it was all very drawn out. Less dragging and more to the point would have done the film good. For now a 2.5*.
