Just watched the first two parts of Rohmer's Moral Tales.

How fascinating it remains to see a development of a "genre" (Nouvelle Vague). While not as groundbreaking as Godard's or Truffaut's first films, this early Rohmer still shows a director who could keep up with his peers.

Personally I thought La Boulangère de Monceau was stronger, but La Carrière de Suzanne was also strong. Well (loosely) acted and with beautiful (coarse-grained) images of Paris.

La Boulangere de Monceau: 4*

La Carrière de Suzanne: 3.5*

One of the six "Contes Moraux" by Eric Röhmer. A typical nouvelle vague film that indeed only talks about the changing feelings among four young people. Didn't find it particularly enthralling and I've seen better ones in the series.

I now see a number of Rohmers one after the other and with those from the 1960s, they always take place in Paris. Often with a similar subject going on about relationships and strong sometimes profound dialogues. Often also supported by a voice-over. They look like Woody Allen films, but not in New York, but in Paris.

Here we see the tensions and perceptions of four young students in which the attitude and image of one, the womanizer, influences the behavior and feelings of the others. How do you handle situations where your best friend sees his girlfriend as a diversion and doesn't always treat her with respect? Are you partly guilty of absenteeism? What does it say about someone when he deliberately hooks a 'simple' because you can be more dominant? What about that affectionate uncritical woman? Doesn't she simply deserve better than to be treated this way?

So interesting material and it becomes even more fascinating when it turns out that everyone misunderstands the situations and the men are left with emptiness as a kind of karma. Not bad all. A Rohmer on level.
