Sydney Carpenter's existence collapses when both her husband and son are killed in a boating accident. When she comes home later, she is shocked to discover that her house has been broken into and everything has been turned upside down. Detective Jim Sanders quickly concludes that it must have been the work of professionals, but nothing seems stolen. When Sydney then discovers that her husband had withdrawn a large sum of money just before the accident - money that is now untraceable, leaving her virtually broke - the case takes increasingly strange forms. She decides to contact Sanders again to find out what caused the accident.
