Meh.

Somehow it makes sense in a crossover like this. There have been so many Grudge and Ring victims that it is rather unbelievable that the paths of these two curses have never crossed before. But does it make sense as a film?

Shiraishi makes it more of a circus film. You don't have to watch this for the excitement. Now I never really liked Ringu, but Ju-On did have a few creepy parts, but not much of that can be seen in this film. In the first part, both franchises get time to do their thing separately, then Masanobu Ando (the one and only) shows up as a crazy exorcist with a sidekick.

And then we get a stand-off between the two creepy ladies, where less is more is no longer the case. The somewhat grotesque ending makes it clear that Shiraishi is aiming for something other than pure tension, but what that other exactly is was not really clear to me while watching. It's certainly not gross, nor freaky, nor scary... just some horror tropes, a lighter tone and a somewhat wilder ending.

In any case, the door is wide open for sequels. I actually hope that they won't happen, because this mash-up adds very little. It's nice that Shiraishi tries to go in a slightly different direction, but he doesn't make much of it. Fortunately, there is enough Toshio, Sadako and Kayako so that it never really gets boring, but I can't call this successful.

2.0*

The bullshit surrounding it is so uninteresting - and also takes up so much time - that I skipped the end of 'Sadako vs. Kayako' (2016) almost didn't make it. The eternal problem that human characters are needed to give such a title fight some cachet. But I'm glad that I persevered with courage, because towards the final sprint the camp factor is finally increased. And then there are great fireworks between the ghost girl from 'Ringu' (1998) and the ghost mother with son from 'Ju-On' (2000). A gigantic miss that the final battle ultimately delivers too little and comes too late. I think it would have been a more fun cult film if they had immediately focused on comic idiocy. A bit like what Takashi Miike did in 'Zebraman' (2004) by turning well girl Sadako into a kind of Power Ranger villain. If you want to go for silliness, be consistent.

An absurd concept naturally deserves an absurd elaboration, but director Kôji Shiraishi's approach results in very little. In fact, the final "meeting" only takes up minutes of the whole thing and is rather limited in scope. Visually, the film looks quite solid, but Shiraishi doesn't seem to care much about building tension or setting the atmosphere. As a viewer you only get entertainment from some nice horror moments that are talked together by very boring characters. The content of this film in no way invites you to become invested in this world and, like my upstairs neighbor, I found it difficult to even make it to the finale, which made the final confrontation a major disappointment. You can develop these kinds of corny concepts in all kinds of ways and Shiraishi seemed to want a little bit of everything, but the end result is almost impossible to digest. Points to the visual presentation as well as some funny horror scenes, otherwise a torture to sit through.
