Good film about a couple of con artists who eventually cheat each other. The characters and their relationships are well portrayed in this film noir. It's fun to see the various scams pass by. As the otherwise excellent plot unfolds, the tension also increases. The three main actors are well cast and producer Martin Scorsese can be heard briefly in the voice-over at the beginning of the film.

A unique experience. A film that opens playfully, but at the same time remains rather distant and cool. Not the easiest trio to go out with. Yet there is an underlying tension between the three that brings about something and every now and then there is even some spice in it. The scene with the oranges for example. Myra's flashback is about nothing, because it is much too farcical, but it is the moment that the film warms up towards a fairly sharp Oedipus noir, where Anjelica Huston steals the show as the determined aunt.

Who's cunning who

Reviewed on Blu-ray from 101BlackLabel.

Dark neo-noir in which three swindlers get entangled in a Greek tragedy. Huston plays a con artist who ruins a horse racing bet for the mafia. Her son Cusack is also a con artist, but more of a con artist, the small-scale tricks. He becomes charmed by Bening, who is also not averse to cunning and deceit. A battle ensues between the two women with Cusack's sympathy at stake. This bizarre love triangle takes a fatal turn in the finale.

Anjelica Huston played by far the best of the three. Produced by Scorsese, who also did the opening voice-over. Great soundtrack by Elmer Bernstein, who also did the music for Ghostbusters and Airplane!
