"You have to lose yourself before you can find yourself"
16-year-old Sicilian Melissa is a sweet, innocent and vulnerable girl who is looking for herself. Like many teenagers, she feels misunderstood by her parents. Her father is always abroad and her mother is completely absorbed in her own world. And then Melissa discovers sex. Instead of the fantastic experience she hoped for, she is brutally and humiliatingly initiated into carnal pleasure, losing her illusions about true love. Determined to unravel the mystery of her own burgeoning sexual desires, her daring experiments lead her into a spiral of perversity.

Not my movie.
That the story appears to be true is perhaps tragic for the 'real' Melissa, but the way we are shown it appeals little to me. Our heroine lets herself be manipulated a bit too easily by her bad friends; it comes across to me as if the boring parts of that game were just slipped through occasionally and that we only get to see the 'exciting' bits. It smacks a bit too much of exploitation and the use of controversial imagery to get an audience into the theater; a somewhat more honest approach—or at least something more resembling it—might have suited me better.
Geraldine Chaplin has a nice role as the grandmother. I am not that impressed by Valverde, however, nor by the other actors.

A mediocre film about a teenage girl who doesn't quite know how to deal with her burgeoning sexuality. A reasonable story, however, the film leans too much towards soft eroticism, causing the main character's relationships to remain somewhat superficial here and there. The acting is of varying quality.

Very mediocre. In fact: Guadagnino's weakest film. Tone is all over the place and ultimately surprisingly moralistic. Ultimately, it's also a hackneyed theme with few surprising angles. Sometimes there are beautiful shots (especially that final party), but based on his first two films, I didn't really get the impression that a new masterpiece had arrived. His artistic debut really lies with his third.
