L'Attentat plot
A revolutionary leader has fled to Geneva, but still poses a symbolic threat to the establishment. A government minister, the CIA and French intelligence conspire to lure them to Paris for an interview and make him disappear.

La verité, Messieurs, est simple. Il n'y aura d'affaire Sadiel!
There really is plenty to criticize about this film – perhaps the plot is too complicated, but on the other hand, that never stops John Le Carre fans. Perhaps the surviving material has been too severely affected by the ravages of time, and indeed, the copy I saw gave the actors an unhealthy greenish tint. And yes, those actors, there are simply too many of them, just as Salieri said about Mozart's music. It just goes on and on – Jean-Louis Trintignant, Michel Piccoli, Gian-Maria Volonté, Philippe Noiret, Bruno Cremer, Jean Seberg, Roy Schneider, Michel Bouquet, Eva – and that naturally implies 'and many others'.
But let's go back to the beginning. The idea is quite easy to follow if you read the summary, but the film perhaps takes just one detour too many to convey that. In the art of storytelling, this is perhaps not the most compelling example ever, let's say.
Nor am I very impressed by the cinematography. If there were any very impressive visuals at all, I missed them a bit amidst all the plot twists, sorry. And no, it absolutely doesn't help that the copy I saw was rather washed out, and mainly emphasized all the pale Parisian green hues. As if all the actors were slightly seasick, so to speak.
Then there is the story. In the good old days, that still worked, with the message that every now and then a journalist would stand up who valued the truth more than his pension. It is a shame we have lost that, with all the ranting on social media and the foul underbelly of the far right—let all those people watch this film, so that they feel ashamed, I hope.
