"We were seconds from death and we didn't know it."
Mid 80's. President Reagan and his Russian counterpart Gorbachov are planning a summit in Iceland with the aim of improving relations between the two superpowers. Just then, a Russian nuclear submarine collides with an American submarine near the coast of Bermuda. The Russians are concerned about the damage sustained and the loss of control of the nuclear weapons on board. The Americans fear the destruction of some major American cities because of the faulty Russian nuclear weapons and believe that the unfortunate incident puts the difficult peace process between Reagan and Gorbachov all the more in jeopardy. However, both captains will not immediately knock on their president's door.
