"Somewhere in his mind!"

When George Taylor returns from World War II, he suffers from amnesia. He was badly wounded in the face, so that a surgeon modeled him a completely new face. Very nice search for the mysterious Larry Cravat in the US just after WWII. Reminds me a bit of The Maltese Falcon, full of crooks, femme fatales, harbors and shady basement bars. Definitely a must see for noir fans.

The premise (John Hodiak with amnesia) leads to a mystery-driven plot that keeps the interest going until the end. Along the way, all kinds of dark figures appear, we are treated to a late night performance in a nightclub, and the shadows simply seem to have a life of their own. John Hodiak as the lead couldn't have turned out better. The second film with him that I see (the other a romantic comedy) and again a direct hit. Well, he plays the noir hero in an archetypal way; hypothermic, a stranger to himself and the environment.

And it's nice that at that time it was a must to include a funny moment in drama/crime to send the audience home in good spirits. And they even let the movie end with it.

What is perhaps still missing in this noir compared to certain other noirs are really witty dialogues; and yet that cannot be a point of criticism here because you should not expect such a thing from a man with amnesia. Then you can be happy that he pulls out the punches like John Hodiak does here.

It's also not an outlier in terms of femme fatale content, but in fact I didn't really miss that part. The two ladies present complemented each other well and also managed to get something out of the men.

It took years before I watched the DVD, but it will undoubtedly go on repeat again at the appropriate time, somewhere in the night.
