John Pielmeier adapted his own play about a baby murder in a monastery into a film script. It was loosely based on true events.

Three actresses in fine form play three strong characters. All three were raised Catholic, but influenced by their pasts they have different religious beliefs. Forensic psychiatrist Martha Livingston (Jane Fonda) is an apostate and seeks a rational explanation for Agnes' pregnancy. Mother Superior Miriam Ruth (Anne Bancroft) wants to believe in miracles despite her doubts. Agnes herself (Meg Tilly) believes unconditionally, tending towards religious mania.

The combination of a detective storyline with the question of faith is daring. A rational explanation appears to be possible - a farm worker has impregnated Agnes - but Pielmeier still leaves a small opening for those who absolutely want to believe in a miraculous explanation.

A controversial film when it came out in 1985, but now terribly topical. I remember that the Roman Catholic Church wasn't too happy with it. That was of course great free publicity for the film, but in the Netherlands the audiences still didn't show up. It's a solid film. Well acted, good story, fitting music and yet it's not quite this film, it all remains a bit tame and that's a shame because this was a chance to shake things up, but Hollywood probably wasn't ready for that at the time. Also the fiddling about how the nun got pregnant, even in 1985 nobody believed in something like providence anymore, that didn't do the film any good either. Actually a missed opportunity.

Nice film about a nun who has to be investigated after the death of her baby. A great mix of drama and a touch of mystery. But the denouement takes a bit too long and the film is a bit long-winded. Excellent acting by the entire cast.
