You got a medal, someone said somewhere in the second part. A poignant comment that also comes across as such. Perhaps the best proof that this miniseries has an impact. Especially because of the dignified way in which it plays out the frustration, powerlessness and traumas for three hours. No excessive hassle to touch the viewer, not even a word too much, but a series that deals with its horrors and subject matter in a sincere and controlled manner. As it should.

Gripping, realistic-looking film about British UN soldiers, who, because of their limited mandate, have to watch with regret as the warring parties commit the most brutal war crimes during the war in Bosnia. Once again it is shown that the civilian population is invariably the main victim of this type of political conflict and that human cruelty apparently knows no bounds. It's great that the film also pays attention to the soldiers' return to everyday life, because as veteran amadeus01 writes in his commentary: “That's when the trouble really started”.

Everything about this film — the acting, directing, camera work — is of a very high standard. Fiercely.

Saw it yesterday and not disappointed at all. The beginning follows the men in a home situation. Those scenes seem a bit dragging, but it is certainly useful to show how these men ended up in something similar from a relatively 'safe' situation. What follows once they are actually broadcast, defies imagination and without things being brought too gruesome. The total chaos, how every fool in a uniform there thinks he is a mini Hiltler about his bridge, neighborhood or roadblock, the heinous acts, the total lack of empathy. Coincidentally, a few hours earlier I saw the last words of Robert Jackson, the prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials in the series/movie Nuremberg. He said evil is the lack of empathy.

As further is the goal, and the image continues, the broadcast of the men is a real nightmare. Until then I think it's good to pretty good. But then the men come home. I find it particularly striking how the main characters proceed in their private sphere and makes the whole thing even better. Except for Brothers with Maguire, I have rarely gotten such a good picture of PTSD. I have to say that I am watching the relevant scenes with especially pvt James with tears in my eyes. So much pent up emotion and frustration.

All's well that ends well, a complete and perfect picture of everyone who got into the war, both before and after that time.
