My Big Fat Greek Wedding plot

"Love is here to stay... so is her family."

Greek-American Toula Portakalos (Nia Vardalos) is clearly the family's concern. She is 30 years old, is not married and has not yet given birth to children, even though that is the Greek woman's goal in life? When all her family's interference becomes too much for her and she meets the non-Greek Ian (John Corbett), she decides to change her life drastically. She undergoes a total makeover, leaves the old familiar Greek family restaurant and decides to marry Ian. However, this causes great panic within her family... .

“I've never seen my sister this happy, Ian. If you hurt her, I'll kill you and make it look like an accident.”

Great rom com. What is striking about My Big Fat Greek Wedding is that the couple actually has to deal with little drama or hurdles. They get together, have to convince their families and get married. No quarrels, no 'we can't live without each other scene' and no grand gesture of love at the end. Quite refreshing actually. The culture clash is nicely worked out, and Vardalos and Corbett are a nice couple. And that makes this Greek wedding look nice.

All Greek clichés at a glance, but to be honest, that in itself makes for an entertaining whole.

Just like with part 2 (which I saw before the first part) the first half of the film is better than the second half, silly jokes about Greek culture with a nice pace and at the time not so much room for that typical American sentimentality, which also immediately slows down the momentum.

Of course it's also predictable, but I'm not going to judge the film on that.

A little bit better than part 2, but I won't get any further than a 3.

*But in the end, we're all fruits*

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a film with nice ingredients that also has a somewhat nice start. Somehow it manages to slacken and doesn't manage to maintain the level. When it was over, I was actually quite happy with it. I think it's a shame because it could have been more.
