A very good Hardy Krüger in the role perfect for him, in a very entertaining performance; you actually empathize with Franz von Werra.

Franz Baron von Werra (Leuk, Switzerland, July 13, 1914 – Vlissingen, October 25, 1941) was a German fighter pilot of the Second World War. He became world-famous during the war, not because of his flying achievements, but because he was the only German pilot who ever managed to escape from a British prisoner-of-war camp and return to Germany.

Von Werra was shot down over England in September 1940 and taken prisoner. Almost immediately after his imprisonment, he escaped, and after a journey of seven months, he returned to Germany in April 1941.

This act made him a hero in Germany and a star in the German propaganda machine. However, Von Werra did not survive the war: 6 months after his spectacular escape, he was shot again, this time with fatal consequences.

Von Werra's adventures were adapted into a film in 1956: The Only One That Got Away.

Oberleutnant Von Werra lacked neither guts nor courage, and this is portrayed very well by Hardy Krüger in this fast-paced film about a true escape story from World War II.
It was almost funny to see how the British were fooled by Von Werra time and again.
The preparations for the underground escape were suddenly far advanced. Came across as a bit surprising.

Quite an entertaining story, this time not a British or American escape story from a German camp, but the other way around.

Furthermore, it is quite striking how non-anti-German this film is, especially considering the fact that the film dates from 1957.
