“Who loves ya, baby?”

Rarely have I found romantic comedy such an odd characterization for a film as I did with The Break Up. The film has comedic elements but there is also a lot of drama in it and the romance is nowhere to be found. That's not a criticism of the film, but I think it's unusual. The film itself has crackling dialogues between Vaughn and Aniston and also some recognizable moments. Of course it's over the top, but an ex who walks past me naked when I'm just watching TV is very recognizable...

It is a pity that after a good start the film quickly sinks into silly games between two people who absolutely cannot live together anymore. There is somewhere a deeper layer and some venom, but that is overshadowed by lame jokes and poorly developed characters. The ending shows guts and tribute for that, but can't save the film for me. They sometimes say that realism does not necessarily make a good film and The Break Up is a clear example of this.

Happening bland.

The setup of a classic romcom, but with a little more drama. Don't let that get out of the picture at all and also kill the romcom part nicely. That's what you get with these kind of half-hearted attempts, of course.

Vaughn and Aniston are above all the image people have of them. As a couple there is no chemistry at all, so the drama immediately breaks down, because how it ends with them never really fascinated me.

The humor is also predictable and telephoned. The bullying is not immediately very sharp, the dialogues lack sharpness and the rom-com atmosphere takes just about all the fun out of it. Again, the balance is completely missed and everything works against each other.

A little lightness remains. And another somewhat funny bit by Favreau. Furthermore, there are much better movies in this genre, even in Hollywood.

1.5*

Nice.

Very enjoyable weekday comedy that easily catches on thanks to the acting talent. A Vaughn isn't always the ideal choice for comedies. I always prefer to see him in roles that are a bit more serious and focused. Just think of his character Bradley Thomas. In this film, however, he seems to pour out all the energy that was bottled up.

On the other hand, there is an Anniston who is experienced in both comedy and romance anyway and therefore seems to know exactly what expectations she has to meet. This makes her performance a bit predictable, but nevertheless competent. The story itself is simple in nature but elaborated in detail. The good thing is that it is easily recognizable, so that it can catch on more quickly.

The humor is quite okay here and there, but it is mainly the fresh and smooth course that manages to form the icing on the cake. Who would have thought that Peyton Reed's best film would be a rom-com? It's not all very ambitious, just very pleasant for a long time and towards the end even surprising. This time no happy ending, but an open ending. Often you don't really see this anymore.

I've had enough fun with it. Perhaps in terms of direction, just a little too unambitious and original to be a final touch, but as a film it absolutely does what it was made for and that is to entertain, fascinate, carry along and stay on your retina. Simple in nature but effective within the storyline. I would like to see the freshness of this film more often.
