Mediocre film in which a woman undergoes surgery after a motorcycle accident and is no longer herself afterward. The film starts off quite well, but then degenerates into a fairly standard zombie film. Some nice and some nasty scenes. Furthermore, this early film by David Cronenberg is quite similar to his previous one.

Slightly more fascinating than Cronenberg's previous film. Those two films have many similarities; a lot of filth, a lot of nudity and Joe Silver. The acting is slightly better here, although lead actor Frank Moore is not good. It is often noted that Cronenberg was inspired here by Night of the Living Dead, although I think the film is more similar to that other George A. Romero film, The Crazies. Rabid starts out quite promising, but gradually it all becomes more and more haphazard and starts to ripple. An hour and a half is just a bit too long here. But at certain moments Rabid is fascinating and nicely done. Marilyn Chambers remains a nice appearance, in a world with apparently a lot of dirty men. Sometimes, just like Cronenberg's previous film, Rabid is quite clumsy in its execution, especially around certain action scenes. But Rabid is a considerable improvement on many fronts compared to those sex zombies from Shivers.

3 stars.

Cronenberg's best horror film. Always been a bit reluctant to watch his older films. In any case, you see a controlled film that knows which direction it is going. For a 70s movie it is also quite bloody and violent. After a traffic accident with a motorcycle, Rose ends up in a hospital where she undergoes a skin transplant. Afterwards, she appears to be physically mutated and goes into fits of rage, sucking blood from her victims using an appendix that has developed under her armpit. A large-scale epidemic soon breaks out. Classic Cronenberg stuff in which scientific messing around turns into horror situations. But worth a look.
