Still fun after more than 20 years, although certain aspects are of course hopelessly dated. The first half is indeed much better than the second, but the film as a whole is still enjoyable. Nice actors, nice story and well made. Funny supporting role by James Cromwell as River Phoenix's father. The DVD version is slightly different from the VHS of the past: 2 scenes have been removed (but can still be viewed as deleted scenes) and 1 new one has been added at the end. Beautiful music by Jerry Goldsmith, by the way.

Agree with many above me. A fantastic first part, but once they come into contact with the aliens it becomes a mess. Completely devoid of atmosphere and a very mediocre ending. Pity.

I really think Joe Dante is a master. His shots are very captivating and there is always movement in this film and it is never boring. It's also funny that there are quite a few inventors present (the father in Gremlins is also an inventor). This time they are more competent inventors because they actually invent a kind of spaceship! Yes, really enjoy this movie. It really went straight to four stars for me. Until... yes, you already said it, those aliens. I must say I also think the second part is cool because of those sets (the inside of the spaceship) and I think the special effect is very good in this film! You have to compare it with other films of that time and not with now. Although I have to say, I'd rather see recreated sets and spaceships than all that green screen messing around. A lot prettier.

In itself it is of course a funny idea, alien children who make contact with human children because they are so curious about planet earth. But it felt a bit run-down and that may be true since they have apparently pulled the plug on production. This must have had quite a budget for such a type of film, I think Dante was so freaked out at the end that the producer must have woken up during the night drenched in sweat.

Eternally a shame of course! If Dante had been able to make his film the way he envisioned it would easily have been a 4 star. Now just a 3 star and a moderate addition to his euvre.
