The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby plot
England in the 19th century. When Nicholas Nickleby's father dies, leaving his family penniless, his uncle Ralph Nickleby, a greedy financier, lands him a job as a teacher at a Yorkshire school. Nicholas soon leaves the school, however, and takes one of the boys, named Smike, with him. Together they join a group of actors. Now Nicholas must protect Smike while he must try to save his sister Kate from his uncle Ralph. Later, he also has to do this for his sweetheart, Madeline Bray, whose father is in prison for debt.
