Delightfully mindless entertainment from the old Hollywood box, with a brilliant climax. Top-notch production!

Good film about a lumberjack who lives with his six brothers and goes looking for a wife. A fun premise where the title fits the plot. Quite conservative overall, but entertaining nonetheless. Cheerful songs and the scene with the barn is the highlight (excellent choreography for both the dancing and the fighting). Easily 3.5 stars.

My mother considers this just about the best film ever – she is 93 now, mildly demented, and deeply caught in the trap of fairy tales. But even then, she admits that it is mainly because she was once infatuated with Howard Keel, singing voice included – don't ask about the story, because she doesn't remember anything about it.

You can look at it in two ways: through my mother's nostalgic gaze, forgetting that the social customs you see in the film were already long outdated in her youth. Or through today's lens, and then it is all very, very, uh, 'old-fashioned'. Still, within the confines of the straitjacket, Milly is clearly the boss, just as my mother always was—and still thinks she is.

Fortunately, we no longer live in that time, and both men and women are now much freer in the way they can shape their lives, so we can regard this film as a curiosity from a bygone era. Like a family album in which only the positive aspects are included, and the negative remain unmentioned.

It is good that we as humanity have moved forward. And also a bit of a shame that the musical didn't keep up with the times.

Oh, for the sake of completeness, I otherwise thought it was a pretty bad movie, with the cardboard backgrounds, the forced songs, the halfhearted acting performances, the musical nonsense, all the exaggerated fuss, and too much forced moralizing. And no, kidnapping women never, no really never, leads to a happily ever after in real life.
