Hans: Het Leven voor de Dood plot
In 1963 the young talented composer and poet Hans van Sweeden shot himself in the head with a rifle. His bohemian existence, which was concentrated on Leidseplein, was a source of inspiration for many of his contemporaries. His death hits hard. Van Sweeden had written the music for Louis van Gasteren's film 'All birds have nests'. In this documentary, the director reconstructs Van Sweeden's life on the basis of memories of friends and relatives. Archive material and interviews alternate in a stream of images that at first seem to have little line, but then raise painful questions about generational conflicts and the malleability of life. Gradually, it becomes not only a testimony to a particularly uncompromising life, but also a group portrait of a generation that still struggles with the former ideals and the achieved reality.
