Before watching the film I read a few chapters from Hemingway's novella Death in the Afternoon. To warm up, so to speak. In it the writer justifies the bullying, mutilation and killing of horses and bulls in the arena. Regulated war as Hemingway calls it. Well, I haven't read such bullshit (pun intended) in a long time. For example, he claims that someone who identifies solely with animals can be violent towards other people, while someone who identifies with bullfighters could love a horse, dog or cat. Well, one does not exclude the other. I wouldn't call it an argument. Hemingway seems to want to justify the cruelty of bullfighting to himself. It is certainly not convincing.

Then the film that, as mentioned, opens with the hypocritical chatter of the director about how cruel and bloodthirsty this sadistic popular entertainment is, and then shows a Hemingway version in which the matador fights a so-called heroic and tragic battle. The end of the film is also very unsatisfactory. The comic note of the picador escaped me completely, but that is besides the point.

Fortunately, Valentino's love affairs predominate, otherwise the rating would have been even lower.
